Tips for Single Parents

Raising a child can be stressful, especially if you are going at it alone. According to the KIDS COUNT Data Center, about 1 in 3 kids live in a single parent household. Even though single parent homes are more common than ever, you may still feel alone which may lead to an incredible amount of stress. Here are 5 tips just for you:

  1. Don’t feel guilty. This is probably one of the most important tips. Too often single parents may feel guilty that they are not providing enough for their child and try to compensate for them being a single parent. The reality is that you do not have to feel guilty at all. You are providing your presence and love for your child which is precious and priceless. By focusing on all the things that you provide to your child on a day-to-day basis, you may be able to see that these things far outweigh those that you may not be able to provide for your child at this very moment.
  2. Create a routine. By having a consistent routine in place, you may be able to provide better structure for your child. A good place to start is a bedtime routine. This can be as simple as reading a book together before bedtime or reflecting on the day. Having a routine will not only help your child feel more secure, but it may also help you relieve stress by helping you feel more organized.
  3. Take care of yourself. Almost all parents occasionally forget to take time for themselves, and this is especially true for single parents. It is important to make sure you are keeping up with your health because you are vital in your child’s life. While maintaining your health by exercising and eating well, you should also try to make time for the things that you love to do. This is a great way to maintain your identity outside of being a parent and reconnect with not only yourself, but also friends and family.
  4. Find a support system. Even though you are a single parent, it does not mean that you have to go through it alone. Lean on your friends and family to help you in any way possible. Think about joining a support group for single parents. Surrounding yourself with people who are going through the same things as you may offer comfort that others may not be able to provide. Having a support system will help you not only take care of your child, but also help you focus on your own well-being.
  5. Stay positive. At this moment it may be hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel, but we can assure you that there definitely is one. By maintaining a positive mindset, you may increase your child’s overall happiness. Children tend to take on the energy that is present around them, so it is important to keep your spirits up. One of the easiest ways to do this is to find joy and laughter. Laughing every day is a sure way to ensure that the good times are only a reach away.
