“It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.” – Mother Theresa
The holiday season is a time of giving, and every gift, big or small, has the potential to make a monumental impact on someone’s life. Gifts don’t have to be limited to family either – the holidays are the perfect time to give back to your community. Here are several ways you can make in impact in your city:
- Toy drives. From national efforts like Toys for Tots, to local drives like the Austin Police Department’s Operation Blue Santa, there are many ways to make sure no child in need is left out and gets a present on Christmas day. Many of these toy drives have boxes located at local stores and businesses. You can also donate toys to children spending the holiday season in a hospital. Nationwide Children’s Hospital and local hospitals like the Seattle Children’s Hospital and the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital all have online wish lists. Here in Austin, the Dell Children’s Hospital is also accepting toy donations for the holidays.
- Canned food drives. Another good way to give back during the holidays is to make sure families in need have food for Christmas. The best way to do this is to donate to canned food drives in your city. Stores and local businesses are likely to have boxes for canned food at the front of the store. You can also donate to your local food banks to help meet their needs during the busy holiday season. If you’re in Central Texas, a good place to go is the Central Texas Food Bank. You can find their most needed items here.
- Donate to local charities and nonprofits. The holidays are a busy time of year nonprofits, as they work to help make the holidays merry for their communities. You can help by donating to these organizations; whether it’s your time, money, or needed goods, your gift will have an impact. In Austin, the Austin American-Statesman’s Season for Caring, which works to meet the needs of 12 families sponsored by local nonprofits, is in full-swing. You can donate to Season for Caring here, and you can view Any Baby Can’s sponsored family’s, the Sherwood, wish list and story here.
- Thank your first responders and service members. Unlike many in the working world, first responders don’t get the holidays off, and service members are often overseas and separated from their families. You can help bring some holiday cheer to them in several ways. Bring holiday treats or meals to your local fire stations and police stations (be sure to call ahead!), or write a letter to a solider overseas.
Here at Any Baby Can, we’re dedicated to making sure the holidays are merry and bright for our valued clients.
